Fr. Ryan’s Homily on Day 6 of the Pilgrimage.

Today we gather in one of the most extraordinary yet surprisingly simple places in all of Paris. Unlike the grandeur of the great cathedrals and basilicas we have visited, the Chapel of the Miraculous Medal is modest and unassuming. If you were walking down the street, you might pass it without giving it a second glance.

And yet, heaven touched earth here.

It was in this very chapel in 1830 that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a young Daughter of Charity, St. Catherine Labouré. Here, Mary entrusted to the Church the gift of the Miraculous Medal and made a promise that has echoed throughout nearly two centuries: “Those who wear it with confidence will receive great graces.”

Thousands upon thousands of people have experienced conversions, healings, protections, and miracles through this simple medal. But the true miracle is not found in the metal itself. The miracle is found in what the medal points us toward: a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through the loving intercession of His Mother.

That brings us directly to today’s Gospel—the Wedding Feast at Cana.

At Cana, Mary notices something everyone else has missed. The wine has run out. A crisis is unfolding. The celebration is about to end in embarrassment and shame. Mary sees the need before anyone asks. She brings that need to Jesus. And then she speaks the words that summarize her entire mission:

“Do whatever He tells you.”

Those words are the key to understanding both Cana and the Miraculous Medal.

Mary never points to herself. She always points to her Son.

The medal is not about Mary replacing Jesus. It is about Mary bringing us to Jesus. Every grace represented on the medal comes from Christ. The rays flowing from Mary’s hands symbolize the graces that Jesus delights to give through her maternal intercession.

At Cana, Mary intercedes and water becomes wine.

At this chapel, countless people have come burdened with worries, illnesses, broken relationships, addictions, grief, and uncertainty. Through Mary’s prayers, many have experienced the transforming grace of Christ—just as ordinary water was transformed into extraordinary wine.

The message is the same today as it was in Cana.

Bring your needs to Jesus.

Trust His timing.

And do whatever He tells you.

As pilgrims, we should also notice something else. We have now entered the Marian portion of our pilgrimage. Up until now, we have walked in the footsteps of saints: St. Thérèse, St. Louis and Zélie Martin, and the holy men and women whose lives point us toward God.

Today we begin walking more intentionally with Our Lady.

That is fitting because every authentic pilgrimage ultimately becomes a journey with Mary. She is the first disciple. She is the perfect pilgrim of faith. She teaches us how to follow Christ with complete trust, even when we do not fully understand His plan.

In a short while, we will visit the Chapel of St. Vincent de Paul, the great patron of priests and apostle of charity. There we will encounter a saint who devoted his life to serving Christ in the poor. His life reminds us that authentic devotion to Mary must always lead to service of others.

This afternoon we will stand before Notre-Dame de Paris, one of the world’s greatest cathedrals. Its very name means “Our Lady.” For over eight centuries, countless pilgrims have entered those doors seeking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. Even after the devastating fire of 2019, Notre-Dame stands as a powerful symbol that faith endures and that what is dedicated to God can be restored.

Then we will enter Sainte-Chapelle, built by King Louis IX to house the relics of Christ’s Passion. There, surrounded by walls of stained glass that seem to dissolve into light, we are reminded that all Christian life leads ultimately to Christ’s sacrifice and victory.

Notice the beautiful progression of our day.

Here at the Miraculous Medal, Mary says, “Do whatever He tells you.”

At St. Vincent de Paul, we learn to serve Him.

At Notre-Dame, we honor Him with generations of faith.

At Sainte-Chapelle, we contemplate His saving Passion.

Every stop leads us closer to Jesus.

And perhaps that is the greatest lesson of the Miraculous Medal. Mary’s role in our lives is not to be the destination but the guide. She takes us by the hand and leads us to her Son.

As we kneel today near the incorrupt body of St. Catherine Labouré, near the very spot where Our Lady appeared, let us entrust to Mary all the intentions we have carried across the ocean. Let us place before her our families, our parish, our school, our loved ones, our struggles, and our hopes.

And then let us listen once again to her words from Cana—the words that remain the secret to every Christian life:

“Do whatever He tells you.”

If we do that, the greatest miracle of all will happen—not merely water becoming wine, but sinners becoming saints.
