Saint David Parish Pilgrimage – Day 4
Today marked our final morning in the historic Normandy region, and it was a day filled with prayer, remembrance, and gratitude.
We began at Omaha Beach, one of the principal landing sites of the Allied invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Standing on the sands where thousands of brave young men stormed ashore under heavy enemy fire, we were reminded of the tremendous courage and sacrifice that secured freedom for future generations. Looking out over the coastline, it is difficult to imagine the chaos and danger that unfolded here, yet the beach remains a powerful testament to valor and perseverance.
From there, we visited the Normandy American Cemetery, the final resting place of more than 9,000 American servicemen and women who gave their lives during the Normandy campaign. Walking among the endless rows of white crosses and Stars of David, overlooking the very beaches where so many made the ultimate sacrifice, was a moving and humbling experience. We prayed for these heroes, for peace in our world, and in gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy today because of their selfless service.
Our pilgrimage then continued to the charming seaside town of Arromanches-les-Bains, situated along the Gold Beach sector of the Normandy coast. The town is famous for the remains of the artificial Mulberry Harbor constructed by the Allies following D-Day, an incredible feat of engineering that helped supply the liberation of Europe. Pilgrims enjoyed time exploring the waterfront, shopping, and sharing lunch while taking in the beauty of the English Channel.
The day concluded with the celebration of Holy Mass in the beautiful Church of Saint Pierre in Arromanches. Gathering around the altar after a day spent reflecting on sacrifice and service, we were reminded that true peace is found in Christ, who calls us to be instruments of His love and reconciliation in the world.
Following Mass, we boarded our coach and began the journey to Paris, the next chapter of our pilgrimage. As the Normandy countryside passed by our windows, we reflected on all we had experienced over these past days—from the faith of Saint Thérèse in Lisieux to the grandeur of Mont Saint-Michel and the solemn memories of Normandy’s battlefields. With grateful hearts, we now turn our attention toward the City of Light, eager to continue this pilgrimage of faith together.
As Day 4 comes to a close, we give thanks for the blessings of this pilgrimage, the history we have encountered, the faith we share, and the many intentions we continue to carry with us from our Saint David family back home.
